Our Mission:
The South Florida Folk and Acoustic Music Club (SFFAMC) is a non-profit organization (501 c3) whose purpose is to promote folk and acoustic music and to provide a community for people who share a love for it. We promote and help sponsor events in the tri-county area (Dade, Broward, Palm Beach). See our events page for calendars and details.
If you’re reading this, you probably make folk music.
Folk music is the music of the people. Folk music has its roots in community, where people gather together, listen, and sing the stories of their lives.
Music that’s rooted in cultural tradition is traditional folk music, regardless of whether it is played in America or Australia or Africa. It still reflects the music of the people.
Singer-songwriters who only know four chords and the truth – that’s folk music. Or singer-songwriters who write complex ballads with a myriad of chords and melodies, like Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, Paul Simon and James Taylor, all play folk music. And so are Taylor Swift and Garth Brooks. They are all singer-songwriters who tell a story.
Folk is protest songs, it’s mariachi ensembles, and it’s experimental, electronic-infused fiddle tunes. We don’t limit folk to any one genre, culture, or group of instruments. The South Florida Folk and Acoustic Music Club embraces an inclusive definition of folk which includes Americana, Blues, Bluegrass, Cajun, Country, Gospel, Jazz, World Music and more. If you can play it and enjoy with a group of folks, then it’s folk. Come join us!
This annual event brings together a diverse lineup of local and national artists, offering performances that range from traditional folk tunes to contemporary acoustic sounds. The festival provides an intimate and vibrant atmosphere for music lovers, with interactive workshops, jam sessions, and opportunities to meet the performers. Attendees can also enjoy local food vendors, arts and crafts, and family-friendly activities, all while supporting the club’s mission to promote and preserve the rich heritage of acoustic music in South Florida.
Getting involved with the South Florida Folk & Acoustic Music Club is a great way to connect with the local music community and help preserve acoustic and folk traditions. Whether you’re a musician, a music enthusiast, or just looking to volunteer, the club offers various opportunities to participate. By joining, you’ll not only contribute to keeping acoustic music alive but also meet like-minded individuals who share your passion for this timeless art form.
We are excited to announce some of our featured performers for the upcoming South Florida Folk and Acoustic Music Festival!
Sara Lee Guthrie, daughter of Arlo and granddaughter of Woody, will be performing Sunday, Feb. 2nd. Sara Lee has a stunning voice and will bring both history and the joy of folk music to the festival. Additional featured performers come from far and wide and will represent the BEST that our Folk and Acoustic Music community has to offer! Joe Jencks is an 25-year veteran of the international folk circuit, an award-winning songwriter, and celebrated vocalist based in Chicago. David Roth strikes many chords, hearts, and minds with his unique songs, offbeat observations, moving stories, sense of the hilarious, and powerful singing and subject matter. As singer, songwriter, recording artist, keynote speaker, workshop leader, and instructor, David has earned top honors at premier songwriter competitions and taken his music, experience, and expertise to a wide variety of venues in this and other countries full-time for three decades. The music of Jack Williams, rooted in his native South Carolina, is shaped by a 65-year career of playing folk, rock, jazz, R&B, classical and the popular music of the 30s, 40s and 50s. He is counted among the most dynamic performers on today’s “folk” circuit”. Jack is considered a “musician’s musician”, an uncommonly unique guitarist, a writer of vivid songs with a strong sense of place, and a storyteller in an old Southern tradition who further illustrates each tale with his guitar. Mad Agnes has won hearts on two continents with their signature intricate harmonies, compelling songwriting, and passionate delivery. The genre-bending trio—Margo Hennebach, Adrienne Jones and Mark Saunders—creates an exciting, inclusive performance, delivering new original songs, selections from their thirteen album catalog, story telling and impromptu vocal improv. Ukulele-toting-mouth-trumpeting-songster Victoria Vox and guitar-slinging-singing-jokester Jack Maher reconnected 18 years after first meeting at the Berklee College of Music (Boston, MA). Both established performers in their own right, the moniker Jack & the Vox was almost too good to be true! Since eloping in 2016, the two have been writing and performing together in between their own gigs. Stylistically it’s a bit Americana, jazz, folk, and pop, but really, there are no boundaries.
And these are just a FEW of the featured perfomers! The bios and schedule will be coming soon!
We are seeking sponsorships to make this event a success and to further our efforts to support performers, artists and music students in South Florida throughout the year.
